ABOUT CROAKIES In 1977, a local ski patrolman from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming came up with the idea for an eyewear retainer that would grip his shades through all kinds of alpine adventures. Using an old wetsuit, sharp scissors, and American ingenuity, he created the first pair of eyewear retainers. Based on the design of a Chinese finger trap, the device quickly became popular with the patrollers. Demand grew rapidly for the patrolman's invention, which was initially nameless.

The nickname 'croakies' was used by the Jackson Hole ski patrol as a placeholder term (similar to 'thingamajig') before sticking as the moniker for the first neoprene eyewear retainer ever invented. Croakies was born in the mountains of Jackson, Wyoming, and the brand still calls the mountains home today with a manufacturing facility in Bozeman, Montana.
